"Yvonne Maximchuk Paints Canada -- “From Sea to Shining Sea" !!
A broad representation of recent works by once local artist Yvonne Maximchuk - with music performances by her daughter Theda Phoenix. Show runs Sunday, Monday, & Tuesdays from 11-4p Sept 19 to Dec 24 2010

Watercolourist and Acrylic Painter Yvonne Maximchuk has been painting for over three decades. Originally from White Rock, Yvonne paints directly from nature as well as in studio. Having left White Rock in 1986 to establish her home studio in Echo Bay on Gilford Island, she has since painted a series of watercolour and acrylics from across Canada as a result of a cross-country road trip last year.  As an artist who not only paints nature, but actually lives with it, Yvonne continues to work in her chosen media. Her work will be on exhibit at the Upstairs Gallery artist collective in Seventh Heaven Bio Salon in Crescent Beach over the coming months. In addition to her Canadian landscapes Yvonne’s daughter, vocalist Theda Phoenix will be offering a live performance next door at Sol Yoga at 3pm. Hair by Day, Art by Night... ~ Art exclusive to Seventh Heaven
New to White Rock, Ron Glowe sensuous landscapes play on light!! “Earth and Sea" Sundays 11-4p Oct 2-Nov 27
The Sensuous Landscape
Born in Winnipeg, Ron paints forms of nature with a keen eye for graphic interpretation. Some of Ron’s lifetime achievements include the Kansas Mid-west Nature Show, the National Exhibition of Canadian Nature Art, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Winnipeg Museum of Man and Nature. He has exhibited his works in both Canada and United States. His paintings and prints have been used across Canada at fund-raising for natural conservation purposes.

Ron is new to White Rock, yet he is no stranger to the process of art. Well into his retirement, Ron continues to paint. His works west of the Rockies depict the uniqueness of the prairies and BC landscape from land to sea. His artistic experience spans a lifetime with ten years as a graphic artist and sixteen as art director of CTV Television in Winnipeg. Ron’s love for nature brings the beauty of our land and the wild creatures that inhabit it into his art. Ron is one of twelve artists selected across Canada for the CBC documentary “Painting Canada” often shown on Canada Day.

As well as a respect for all living things, evident in his works is the geometric play of colour and light to capture the grandeur of the Canadian landscape.

True to Nature Nature Photography by Local Photographer Eric Kehler - November 2010 to January 2011
Eric sees his work as an opportunity to share the natural beauty of the places he visits with those who are unable to be there themselves. Eric believes that there is an intrinsic beauty virtually everywhere and it is the photographer’s task to find it and then capture it to share with others. Although he considers his photographs as artworks, he also believes in minimal amounts of retouching.  His work covers a wide range of topics, some of which are specifically searched out, but the majority of them are discovered serendipitously through his travels in the country-side. Merkabah Man October 8, 2009 Synergy (1+1)=3
~ Opening into concentric circles of community . . . (drum heartbeat)

“Aiyeeee--yah!”

Logos, the origin of sound

What am I?

What is a man? A man is adamant
I am Adam
together we create
from empty space...
a whole human race!

A man is nothing...
a thought in thin air...
until we dream ourselves here
A man is nothing that does not
already exist in nature; Man – mind – being
Art is woman! Flower of life...
flows with the moon
unfolds with the tide
follows the seasons
It is in her nature to love
Circle of light: Life unflods
Man holds the space, for love...

... and what is this fear of flying?
Afraid to face? What?!! – Not that we might fail, but
that we may live!
... beyond our wildest dreams!!!

Aaah... but God is a she
Baaah... in black sheep's wool
She, who runs with the wolves
She, who must be obeyed! She is creation
She... is the center of our world
She is... human being
She lights my way!

I am Merkabah, man!
I am OK
I am that I am
I exist
I love
I am

The Waterlillies ~ A Meditative Masterpiece
The Waterlillies is more than an exquisite and universally appealing traditional masterwork.

The significance of this work of art is more than simply a snapshot of nature in that waterlillies allude to the unseen of dark waters, the beauty of life, and the light that supports us. The gift of the lotus flower, whose unseen roots are transformed from the subterranean murk of the unknown to the beauty of light in a quiet pond floating as if in air, becomes very spiritual in nature.

Larger Than Life Drawing Group ~ Symbiotica
The group show running at the White Rock Arts Council at Windsor Square, 90-1959 152 Street in South Surrey BC from July 3 to 31, 2008 took on a transformational subject in the theme of "symbiosis."

Each of the 20 artists represented displayed their personal visions of what symbiosis personifies to them individually and as a collective. The group has been meeting weekly in the south Surrey area to draw from a live model for over 15 years. The insights gained into our human condition are both intimate and contemplative. Here are some examples of the art that was on display :

Iambic Symbiotic ~ Conceptual Work by Lucan Charchuk July, 2008

Speaking for the artist's process and the co-creative nature of the group Lucan Charchuk's conceptual piece titled "iambic symbiotic" portrays an empty picture frame except for the representation of a business card with a picture of one of his art commissions floated in the center of the glass. Only visible to the viewer upon treating this like a three dimensional piece, does one understand the back of the card to contain a second business card design used to co-promote the Seventh Heaven Hair Gallery and Bio Salon which houses works by two resident local artists Dale Ramsey and himself, Lucan Charchuk. The message on the card invites the viewer to "envision" an image of their own with which to fill the empty frame in the form of a future commission. Accompanying the framed assemblage, is a poem by the same title:

Iambic Symbiotic ~ A Short Synopsis

I am symbiotic
Nature or nurture, process in progress
I love, I love… we labour in love,
We will have will; Dare to dream...
Cling to things, have feelings
feed off other things

Envision, none of the above;
“what is your attachment to this stone?”
Says a voice not unlike that from the heavens.

“Lichen, moss unto a forest”

...how’s that working for you?
“Can you walk on water?” Algae says to a pond;
I grasp the stone feeling hopeless
Cling to a cliff, feeling helpless, lost and alone
That is so two-dimensional ! ~ I am working on...
A new piece of stone, white alabaster
I see the mouth of Venus exposed like the moon
Swallows the earth; I am dark and alone
What’s the attraction?
Incidentally, symbiosis is not co-dependent,
Albeit we are able to co-habit;
Life is a one-way street,
The energy flows out of it;
It can be parasitic or co-habitational
Or mutually beneficient;
It is self-gratifying
We are independently interdependent,
Otherwise invisible,
Dancing on solid air;
Transforming form
Please fill this frame with negative space,
“glass or air?” ~ one is visible,
The other, there

About the Book

"It is natural to sing and dance poetry. What is not natural is to bury poems in skinny books lined up on dusty shelves." V.G.

Taoist Inner Tube Rider began as a metaphor to describe the author's style of writing that has evolved into a book and CD. It is created to bring the words alive and to inspire people to engage with poetry.

Through word, sound and image revelations are presented as a lyrical journey through time and as a cyclical ride through nature. The writing spans four decades. The geographies are desert, forest, waterways, and sky represented in wind, weather and sound waves.

A woman rides through them all - flowing through vistas and deep feelings to find meaning and purpose. Her insights and longing are transformed into a resolve to live life fully, at peace with the Great Mystery.

Subject:The Secret Behind the Secret of Manifesting ~ Aboriginal Dreamtime
Security:Public
Mood: hopeful

Getting Primitive: Drawing Down Your Wishes!
November 23, 2009 by Josh Williams

In his article, Josh W. offers us a super-powerful technique focusing on anything we want to draw into your life and making it happen with the full power of the universe! This technique has been used since the dawn of time, and even pre-historic hunter/gatherers knew about it! It's not what he is saying, but how he says it that interests me. I like the way he has illustrated it to convey the idea to us. He gets primitive in this article to make some magic happen!

The Allegory of the Cave
Not all cave drawing were animals and such. Like with the aboriginal ‘dreamtime’ cave drawing. These were not pictures of animals, hunting or even humans, although they were human-like. We now use cave drawings as a record of what they saw/believed, that doesn't mean it was their intention do use them as records for. Other civilisations used a more advanced form of cave drawings (Hieroglyphs) and they used it to record their happenings, that doesn't mean it was their intention as well. However, if we must draw attention to creating intention, then this is just his will. We are all prisoners of our own device!

Writing On The Wall ~ Socrates begins by describing a scenario in which what people take to be real would in fact be an illusion.
Inside the cave
One of the most fascinating relics left behind from the ‘lithic’ (megalithic, neolithic etc. prehistorical peoples) folks are the cave paintings they created. Steeped in obvious symbolism and innate power, these designs were scribed onto the walls of pitch-black caves by tallow-light using the flint blades or red ocher finger paint. Scenes depicting the animals they needed to kill in order to survive, abundant crops, healthy women with child, and other ideals of fertility are the main topic of most all cave paintings. In most of these paintings, the animals are shown strong and healthy, with either arrows, traps or spears drawn onto them. Occasionally, the mystic-artist would dip their own hand into red ocher paint and apply a hand stamp over the animal- showing the he has caught it and it is within his grasp.

Cave Magic ~ Socrates next introduces something new to this scenario. Suppose that a prisoner is freed and permitted to stand up. If someone were to show him the things that had cast the shadows, he would not recognize them for what they were and could not name them; he would believe the shadows on the wall to be more real than what he sees.
Release from the cave
Most experts agree that the spellbinding art found on cave walls is not a testament to history, a record of hunts or even tributes to rich tribe members- but rather a stunning display of sympathetic magic. Ancient mystics believed that an image of a thing was intimately linked to the reality of that thing- so that by creating a clear and vivid image of a mammoth, and then applying successful spear or axe wounds to that image, success on the actual hunt was guaranteed. In addition to paintings, the hunters would also carry around small bone, stone or ivory animal carvings representing the animal they wished to catch. This, they believed, would allow them to resonate with that animal and draw it towards them. Through the process of sympathetic magic, the goal we want to achieve is manifest through creativity (painting, drawing, sculpting, etc., or in advanced levels purely within the mind-scape) and made as ‘real’ as possible within our paradigm. Then, the relationship we want to have with that goal is applied to the image to create a strong bond of magnetic resonance.

Timeless Attraction ~ Socrates remarks that this allegory can be taken with what was said before, viz. the metaphor of the Sun, and the divided line. In particular, he likens: "the region revealed through sight"(517b-c).
Return to the cave
I’ve always loved the process of studying and exploring the spiritual ways of our shared ancestors. I think that working, as best we can, with the methods our earliest fore-bearers realized links us to a stream of power which is literally tens of thousands of years old. It’s also interesting to see how what experts in this field have discovered about the spirituality and religion of the ancients has been carried in to even modern spiritual paths. Working with any form of mystic spiritual working that has history can lend us the power of its history if we simply acknowledge and honor that stream of ancestral power and wisdom. Socrates remarks that this allegory can be taken with what was said before, viz. the metaphor of the Sun, and the divided line. In particular, he likens: "the region revealed through sight" – the ordinary objects we see around us – "to the prison home, and the light of the fire in it to the power of the Sun. And in applying the going up and the seeing of what's above to the soul's journey to the intelligible place, you not mistake my expectation, since you desire to hear it. A god doubtless knows if it happens to be true. At all events, this is the way the phenomena look to me: in the region of the knowable the last thing to be seen, and that with considerable effort, is the idea of good; but once seen, it must be concluded that this is indeed the cause for all things of all that is right and beautiful – in the visible realm it gives birth to light and its sovereign; in the intelligible realm, itself sovereign, it provided truth and intelligence – and that the man who is going to act prudently in private or in public must see it" (517b-c). After "returning from divine contemplations to human evils", a man "is graceless and looks quite ridiculous when – with his sight still dim and before he has gotten sufficiently accustomed to the surrounding darkness – he is compelled in courtrooms or elsewhere to contend about the shadows of justice or the representations of which they are the shadows, and to dispute about the way these things are understood by men who have never seen justice itself?" (517d-e)

Echoes From The Cave Into Your Life
Colleen Wallace Nungari Dreamtime
Applying the power of sympathetic magic, as performed simply by the ancients, is both fun and effective. It allows us the opportunity to get closer to our goal by actualizing it from the depths of our creative, emotional, logical and spiritual centers. It also allows us to interact with it as though it already exists in our paradigm- which in and of itself attunes us to the law of attraction.
Picasso - Bull in Cave
To make your own ‘cave paintings’ calling on the universal law of sympathy, try the following:

1) Draw a picture of your patron deity/deities. Then, place in their hands or at their feet a representation of the goal you wish to manifest. Allow Them to become the face of the Divine which specializes in that goal. Hang the picture up somewhere special and use it for meditation, prayer, offerings or rituals. In ancient cave sanctuaries, the Mother Goddess or Sky God were often painted on walls that had a large stone altar directly in front of them. In this way, mystics could approach the facet of Divinity which was directly connected to their desire.

2) Draw yourself in possession of your goal. Add things to yourself in drawing that make it personal- date of birth, favorite jewelry, favorite colors, etc. Draw yourself into the reality of having what you want- and use that drawing as a type of magnet to call forth your wish. Spend time with it daily in positive expectation and gratitude.

3) For a really fun experience which is slightly more ritualistic in nature, draw or sculpt a representation of your goal. Make it as vivid and clear as you can. Spend time having fun putting energy and attention into it. Once you’re done, smear the palm of your left hand with your favorite color of water-based paint (poster paint, finger paint, etc.) and stamp your palm print onto the icon. In this way, you are ‘marking your goal’ and stating to yourself and to the universe that it belongs to you- and that you are rerady and willing to receive it. The left hand is energetically receptive, which acts upon subtle body energy to draw forth the goal.

4) You can get really creative and make cave paintings on 7-day candles, allowing them to release the power of the sympathetic magic as they burn…

5) You could also make small clay talismans or icons to wear, connecting you to your goal just as the ancients did…

6) You could create cards you keep on a shrine or in your pocket showing you in possession of the goal…

7) You could really reflect the ways of thew ancients by drawing in the snow or sand and allowing nature to ‘absorb and direct’ the power of your goal, again just as the ancients did.

This work not only helps attune you to the limitless potentials of your journey- it also helps connect you with the blessed ancients and to the fundamental spiritual powers which flow throughout time and place. Here's my dream for the future, I'm dying to find out how in countries such as Morocco, Kenya, South Africa etc people learn to be fluent in French English, Arabic, Berber, Swhahili, Gikuyu and so many other languages with a fraction of the resources available in the schools here.

Plato
Book VII of The Republic

The Allegory of the Cave
"Here's a little story from Plato's most famous book, The Republic. Socrates is talking to a young follower of his named Glaucon, and is telling him this fable to illustrate what it's like to be a philosopher -- a lover of wisdom: Most people, including ourselves, live in a world of relative ignorance. We are even comfortable with that ignorance, because it is all we know. When we first start facing truth, the process may be frightening, and many people run back to their old lives. But if you continue to seek truth, you will eventually be able to handle it better. In fact, you want more! It's true that many people around you now may think you are weird or even a danger to society, but you don't care. Once you've tasted the truth, you won't ever want to go back to being ignorant!

[Socrates is speaking with Glaucon]

[Socrates:] And now, I said, let me show in a figure how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened: --Behold! human beings living in a underground den, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the den; here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads. Above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance, and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way; and you will see, if you look, a low wall built along the way, like the screen which marionette players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets.

[Glaucon:] I see.

And do you see, I said, men passing along the wall carrying all sorts of vessels, and statues and figures of animals made of wood and stone and various materials, which appear over the wall? Some of them are talking, others silent."

The importance of the allegory lies in Plato's belief that there are invisible truths lying under the apparent surface of things which only the most enlightened can grasp.

Crow Majnun

There you have it,
The crows have it!
They bitch and bawl,
Crow and caw,
From atop of every gable and wall,
Trash bin,
Fence and log,
Treetop and crows nest;
They herald yet another dawn; Yawn…
Yammer and yawl!
Caw, caw, caw!
It’s enough to drive anyone servile;
It weakens their victims; We cringe;
Thereon begins
The scavenger hunt;
Swoop, fell and strike!
Shadow on victim
Bordering on
Aggravated assault.

Crookery – A Raucous of Crows

OE: Rook (hruc) or (hruch) a black gregarious bird
resembling a crow; By rook or by crook,
a gang of rooks, (hoodlums)
have come to rob the rookery
resembling a murder...

A rogue, black crow, appears
a thief to steal the spoils
from the feast of well-fed fears
The gang of rooks impress their beaks
with taloned hooks upon the feast
of fools, unwitthing oafs and well-bred loafs
An old hodge podge of stodge white bod’s
are feeding at the human troughs
The queen of spades with rounded forms
on never knows from whence they come...
suddenly the party roils
rounding off the sponge rolls
making off with chocolate cake
and creamy cups of café au laté
drinking through the nose holes (with straws)
Those rogues!

Black birds scavenge crumbs like rats
blind birds snatch that to which
we have become detached,
our man-made habitat
comfortably numb...
harbored in abundance
Escape... on silent wing, before their tails
can be seen

The Epic Journey of Sean Aiken

Sean Aiken, the bloke who worked a different job every week for a year will be at the Inlet Theatre this Wednesday April 16 to talk about what it was like to work 52 different jobs in a year. Word on the street is that he might show some videos and such. I'm a huge fan of his project and can't wait to see what he's got to say. Not sure if he's going to bring that drum set, but I'm sure you can email him and put in a special request.
What I did each week for a year...

Sean is now working on a documentary of his experience. Check out the radio broadcast:

Don't miss Kyle MacDonald!

Kyle MacDonald captured the world's attention when he set out to trade a single red paper-clip for a house. Fourteen trades and countless stories later, he succeeded. His remarkable journey illustrates the importance of having a vision, building relationships and thinking bigger.

Capilano Suspension Bridge ~ North Vancouver, BC

The Capilano Suspension Bridge is Vancouver’s oldest tourist attraction, having been built in 1889. Standing on a shaky bridge 226 feet above the canyon floor, attached only by small cables, still delivers the same thrills that it did over a century ago. 135 meters (443 feet) long, a footbridge made of long cedar plank and steel cable is suspended across the gorge, while below the bridge is the Capilano River, where visitors can sometimes see kayakers or salmon in the waters below.

And another little vertigo. . .

Forget the Capilano suspension bridge, here's El Chorro at El Camino del ray!
Originally built in 1901, this walkway now serves as an aproach to makinodromo, the famous climbing sector of El Chorro.

PFM have always been a great prog rock band (classically trained) to rival the likes of Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull or Emerson Lake and Palmer. The pioneer of Italian Progressive Rock, PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI is one of the leaders of the 70s prog movement. PFM developed a style of melodic and instrumental richness, which is uniquely Italian while maintaining links with the rest of the prog world. Lyrical, romantic, delicate music played with finnesse. Their sumptuous compositions and arrangements are sometimes compared with early King Crimson, yet unlike any other in their class. Listen to the sailing skies of fall in Impressions of September...

"Finally a Gordon Lightfoot song I can stand to listen to and a face in him that romanticizes the real troubador in knightly fashion of a Lancelot. Sure lightfoot wrote it, but it only has essence when brought to the heights of chivalry in valiant King Arthur fashion. Lightfoot was a knight of sorts, a Don Quixote chasing words, the depths of which remain unseen... until a woman's touch can bring it's spirit out of dreams into reality to the screen to soothe a lonely soul..." ~ Luke 10:11-07
